本書作者Martina Deuchler任教於倫敦大學亞非學院,長年耕耘於朝鮮時代史研究,是歐美韓國史學界的代表研究者之一。在這本去年最新的研究成果中,她指出地方土著集團以及其後裔的長期延續性,才是朝鮮王朝的身分體系得以維持至19世紀末的主因。這些土著集團自新羅時期(五世紀)以降便開始成為地方菁英,在朝鮮王朝建立後,他們透過實踐儒家理論,穩固了自己的菁英地位。因此,與其說是儒家意識形態導致了朝鮮時期僵化的身分體系,不如說是這些地方土著集團的長期存在,保障了這個體系的存續。
